F.A.Q.

What is the difference between the Essential Kindred Collection and The Authentic Film Collection?

The Essential Kindred Collection was the very first presets presented by Kindred. They are incredibly powerful tools for both the digital and hybrid shooter alike. Being a perfect middle ground between a digital image and a film scan, the Essential Kindred Presets spread across both platforms and allow both the editing novice and expert alike to achieve film-like emulations.

The Authentic Film Collection are presets based on specific film stocks. These presets are meant for the film obsessed digital shooter and film hybrid shooters. These presets are more technical and push the limits of many color foundations of editing software available today. Created through taking risks based on film education, these presets are specifically created to match the personality and tendecies of specific film stock. These presets are meant for those who are proficient with their editing software and those who are willing to be pushed to learn.

What is the difference between Kindred Essential and Kindred Technical?

Kindred Essential comes with 2
presets, the original contrast version and its low contrast version. Essential was created to be an all around, strong option for most any lighting scenario and works in both natural light and artificial light. Essential has warmer highlights and shadows. If you like peachy warm highlights, Essential is your match.

Kindred Technical is one preset. Technical was made to be paired with reception images and or artificial light. However, many of our users are loving using technical all the time and not just for artificial light images. Technical has cooler highlights and shadows. If you like brassy gold highlights and a little more pop, Technical is for you.

Both presets have crisp clean whites and contrast but their whites and contrast are structured very differently.

What cameras work best with the Kindred Presets?

Though the preset was originated using Canon SLRs, we have tested over 15,000 images from ALL camera makes and models. The presets have been tweaked to work across the board. Some of our most successful users are thrilled to say that they finally have a preset that pairs well with their Nikon!

Does Kindred Presets work best with custom or auto white balance?

The preset applies a custom WB upon application, so this is really a decision for you during your sessions. AWB does save you some work beforehand, but the result is the same with either method.

Is it best to under or overexpose in camera for Kindred?

Just as most do when using film, the best practice is to expose properly for your subjects and then alter the preset as needed when editing. Kindred can handle most anything you throw at it but it really shines with properly exposed images.

What Film Stocks do Kindred Essential and Kindred Technical emulate?

The best part about Kindred is that it was created from a foundation of an ignorant love of film. Not knowing what stock did what, Jennefer crafted the preset to emulate what she loved most about film imagery; creamy skin tones, natural contrast, and rich greens. So, rather than emulating one stock, Kindred Essential and Kindred Technical can most be compared to any 400/800 film stock and can be adjusted with a few tweaks to match your custom film scans. It is important to note that, it isn’t solely the film stock chosen by a photographer that dictates how an image will look, a photographers lab and their preferences in scanning will affect the scan most.

Does the Kindred Technical Preset only work on flash images?

Great question! We’ve found that Kindred Technical does magical things with poorly lit images, shady day portraits, and images that are asking for a little bit more punch just as well as it does with artificial light images.

Does the Kindred Essential Preset work on flash images?

Absolutely! Kindred Essential is lovely on flash images. Kindred Technical was created to have the look of a flash film photograph. Kindred Essential, when applied to a flash image does beautifully but does tend to need some more tweaking than Technical.
